Sir George Monoux College has a more than 500-year history. Sir George Monoux, the man who founded the College, was born in 1465. He was a wealthy man who spent much of his time in Walthamstow and held a number of important posts in 16th-century London, including Lord Mayor, Alderman, Sheriff of London, and Warden of the Draper's Company. Sir George Monoux was selected to serve in Parliament in 1523 as a Burgess for the City. He constructed the almshouses and associated school in St. Mary's Churchyard, Walthamstow Village, from which Sir George Monoux College was born. Before moving to West Avenue, High Street, and finally its current location in Chingford Road in July 1927, the Monoux School operated there for 353 years. The western end was rebuilt in 1955 after it was damaged in October 1940. From 1959 to 1969, it was a grammar school for boys. From 1969 to 1986, the school served as a comprehensive institution, and in the late 1960s, it was ranked as the 11th-best public school in the country. When the institution changed from a primary school to a sixth-form college in 1986, girls were finally permitted to enrol. In 1993, it became a college via incorporation. The College has spent millions of dollars in recent years to provide students with top-notch facilities. In September of their respective years, the Brockman Building and the Drapers Building were both dedicated. Nearly 500 years after its founding, Sir George Monoux College still offers young Londoners a top-notch education, carrying on the original mission of its founder.
